It was “Root, root, root for the Mariners!” on Friday, July 12th, when a group of students from Green River Community College went to Safeco Field to watch Seattle’s favorite baseball team take on the Los Angeles Angels. For many of our international students, it was their first experience of America’s pastime, and we were well-rewarded for cheering on our local team.
I warned the students beforehand that baseball games can be hard to predict: sometimes they provide edge-of-your seat play action, but other times they include inning after inning without a scoreboard change. Luckily for us, this game was especially exciting, with four Mariners homeruns and consistent hits throughout the innings. Much to our delight, the Angels didn’t put up much of a fight, and the Mariners ended up winning the game 8-3. Students enjoyed such baseball traditions as The Wave throughout the stadium and singing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” during the Seventh Inning Stretch. All in all, it was a wonderful evening consisting of perfect weather, a winning team, and lasting memories.
This trip to watch the Mariners play was sponsored by International Programs at GRCC. It is one of many great activities planned for our students throughout this summer. Stop in at the Student Life Office to see the other fun events we have arranged for you!
